In partnership with Kawarehe Trust, Adventure Solutionz and Te Tohu o Te Ora o Ngāti Awa, we are pleased to announce the commencement of the build programme for Kawarehe Kainga Māori at Huna Road Whakatāne.
Karakia was carried out on Friday 14 November with key stakeholders represented to witness the formal process of "turning the sod". Stage 1 will consist of 16 Affordable Rentals worth an estimated cost of $10.4m. Funded by Ministry of Housing Urban Development and the Kawarehe Trust the project will be completed by June 2026. Feasibility studies for a further 35 houses have been completed and now pending finance confirmation.
Building Plans depict the relocation of the existing homestead from its existing site to provide a central community hub for the overall development. The homestead will be surrounded by park-like features and a further:
- 4 x 2-bedroom duplex ( 8 units )
- 3 x 3-bedroom standalone homes
- 1 x 3-bedroom duplex ( 2 units )
- 2 x 4-bedroom standalone homes
The Affordable Housing programme is a hand up toward home ownership. This is a subsidised rental programme that is targeted at whānau who are working and on a pathway toward home ownership. Whānau are able to apply to the tenancy management company, He Tohu Kainga.
